Pilgrimage of Ezekiel

Ezekiel:

40:1 In the five and twentieth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, in the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was smitten, in the selfsame day the hand of the LORD was upon me, and brought me thither.

40:2 In the visions of God brought he me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south.

The time is given: The Muslim pilgrimage starts on the 10th day of the lunar month of Zill-Hajj.

Place is also given: “God brought he me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south.”

The City is in SOUTH to the Land of Israel, Where it’s enclosed by Mountains.

What is this City?

Without any doubt Makkah just lies in the south of Land of Israel and it’s enclosed by Mountains.

Yet further evidences are followed in his description to that place..!

Ezekiel describes to us the shape of that place in Chapters 40-43:

42:15 Now when he had made an end of measuring the inner house, he brought me forth toward the gate whose prospect is toward the east, and measured it round about.

42:16 He measured the east side with the measuring reed, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed round about.

42:17 He measured the north side, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed round about.

42:18 He measured the south side, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed.

42:19 He turned about to the west side, and measured five hundred reeds with the measuring reed.

42:20 He measured it by the four sides: it had a wall round about, five hundred reeds long, and five hundred broad, to make a separation between the sanctuary and the profane place.

According to this shape, this place is foursquare in shape !

41:4 So he measured the length thereof, twenty cubits; and the breadth, twenty cubits, before the temple: and he said unto me, This is the most holy place.

The exact measurements of the Kaaba in Makkah.

41:7 And there was an enlarging, and a winding about still upward to the side chambers: for the winding about of the house went still upward round about the house: therefore the breadth of the house was still upward, and so increased from the lowest chamber to the highest by the midst.

47:1 Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar.

47:2 Then brought he me out of the way of the gate northward, and led me about the way without unto the utter gate by the way that looketh eastward; and, behold, there ran out waters on the right side.

47:3 And when the man that had the line in his hand went forth eastward, he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the waters were to the ankles.

47:4 Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters were to the knees. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through; the waters were to the loins.

47:5 Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over: for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over.

41:22 The altar of wood was three cubits high, and the length thereof two cubits; and the corners thereof, and the length thereof, and the walls thereof, were of wood: and he said unto me, This is the table that is before the LORD.

44:15 But the priests the Levites, the sons of Zadok, that kept the charge of my sanctuary when the children of Israel went astray from me, they shall come near to me to minister unto me, and they shall stand before me to offer unto me the fat and the blood, saith the Lord GOD.

44:16 They shall enter into my sanctuary, and they shall come near to my table, to minister unto me, and they shall keep my charge.

44:17 And it shall come to pass, that when they enter in at the gates of the inner court, they shall be clothed with linen garments; and no wool shall come upon them, whiles they minister in the gates of the inner court, and within.

44:18 They shall have linen bonnets upon their heads, and shall have linen breeches upon their loins; they shall not gird themselves with any thing that causeth sweat.

44:19 And when they go forth into the utter court, even into the utter court to the people, they shall put off their garments wherein they ministered, and lay them in the holy chambers, and they shall put on other garments; and they shall not sanctify the people with their garments.

44:21 Neither shall any priest drink wine, when they enter into the inner court.

42:13 Then said he unto me, The north chambers and the south chambers, which are before the separate place, they be holy chambers, where the priests that approach unto the LORD shall eat the most holy things: there shall they lay the most holy things, and the meat offering, and the sin offering, and the trespass offering; for the place is holy.

42:14 When the priests enter therein, then shall they not go out of the holy place into the utter court, but there they shall lay their garments wherein they minister; for they are holy; and shall put on other garments, and shall approach to those things which are for the people.

In these verses Ezekiel refers to the sacrifice during Al Hajj,”the meat offering and the sin offering”. Furthermore, he talks about Al Ihram at the beginning of the Hajj..”they shall lay their garments wherein they minister, and shall put on other garments”, and they are the garments described by him in 44:17-19.

44:5 And the LORD said unto me, Son of man, mark well, and behold with thine eyes, and hear with thine ears all that I say unto thee concerning all the ordinances of the house of the LORD, and all the laws thereof; and mark well the entering in of the house, with every going forth of the sanctuary.

44:6 And thou shalt say to the rebellious, even to the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; O ye house of Israel, let it suffice you of all your abominations,

Compare this with Quran…

I see the turning of thy face (for guidance to the heavens: now Shall We turn thee to a Qibla that shall please thee. Turn then Thy face in the direction of the sacred Mosque: Wherever ye are, turn your faces in that direction. The people of the Book know well that that is the truth from their Lord. Nor is Allah unmindful of what they do. (The Noble Quran, 2:144)

“Pilgrimage of Ezekiel” is a very interesting and exciting article. But after reading it a number of times, I do not yet feel confident enough to point out to a Christian that it is indeed an exact description of the Holy Ka’bah. In my humble opinion these chapters (40-47) are quite perplexing, and unless a very detail explanation is given in clearer terms, the conclusion might sound too far-fetched. In order to be able to argue effectively, the Christian interpretations of these chapters should be critically analyzed and then countered as well. I should also like point out a few points:
    1. You point out that a verse mentions 10th day of the month, but it also mentions it was the beginning of the year, where as Zulhijja is the last month of the year. Could you please explain this discrepancy. Is the first month of the Jewish lunar calendar same as the last month of the Islamic calendar?

    2. Verse 40:2 says that the City is situated on the south of Israel. It doesn’t mention that the City is surrounded by mountains. But it seems to me that you are trying to say that the City on the south itself is surrounded by mountains, and hence it is the City of Makkah. Could you please explain in detail.

    3. The shape of the building is foursquare – that’s OK. But what about the measurements. The verses under consideration give very detail measurements, which are in reeds and cubits. First of all, these measurements should be converted into feet and inches or in metres and centimetres etc, and then the measurements of the Ka’bah should also be mentioned very clearly either in feet and inches or in metres and centimetres. Only then we may say that the measurement in the verses are the same as that of the Ka’bah.

I very eagerly look forward to hearing from you.

Jazakallahu Khairan for your excellent effort. Was-salaam.

As-salaamu ‘Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu.

Further to my comment of 9 February 2010 on your article “Pilgrimage of Ezekiel”, I should like to add another point.

According to Ezekiel 47:1, “….behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: ….., and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south side of the alter.”

Could you please mention the exact location of the well of Zamzam in relation to the Ka’bah. Only then someone would be able to say emphatically that the verses definitely describe the well of Zamzam. Otherwise it seems very vague. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Jazakumullahu Khairan.
    Was-salaam.

  3. Wa’alaykumusSalaam wa Rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

I don’t exactly think that the conclusion might seem far fetched and also Christians yet to give the name of the place mentioned in the prophecy if they disagree. The explanation comes exactly to that of Ka’aba and Insha’Allah, I will try to answer your questions as much as I can.

    1) The date is a difficult question; not just for Muslims but for Christians and Jews as well. The calculation is quite difficult. The Islamic calendar has been changed quite a few times; not the dates but the months. In the Quran we find that the pagans used to play with months and postpone some months or bring them closer deliberately. For example, they were forbidden to fight in sacred months so when a month arrived, they postponed it for later. For example, a person is not supposed to do something in March and when March arrives, he changes its name to April and after April he names it March. The pagan Arabs used to switch the order of the months.

This could also have been the custom of the Jews (although not sure or proven but very likely as Jews used to follow lunar calendar previously (in Biblical times) but now they add 19 days after some years or something like that: please see “Jewish calendar” on Wikipedia for details).

The important thing is the 10th of the month ! The only important event that happens on any 10th of any month in any calendar is Hajj.

  4. 2) City in south and surrounded by mountains:

40:2 In the visions of God brought he me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south.

The verse says that Prophet Ezekiel saw a mountain which was similar to that in the city in the south. This means that the city in the south also has mountains.

There are several points that cannot be answered by either Jews or Christians:

    – 41:4 So he measured the length thereof, twenty cubits; and the breadth, twenty cubits, before the temple: and he said unto me, This is the most holy place.

The most Holy place ! For Christians, its either Vatican or Jerusalem. For Jews, its Solomon’s temple but none are foursquare. For Muslims it is Kaaba which is foursquare!

41:7 speaks of enlargement of the house (notice it uses the word House and not temple or anything else!). Kaaba has been enlarged a few times; atleast once during the time of the Prophet (s.A.a.w). It used to get destroyed by rains and built again.

41:22 speaks of altar (Maqaam e Ibrahim).

  5. 3) The shape of the building.

    Measurements of the Kaaba:

The prophecy above mentions in 41:4 that its length and breadth (width) are 20 cubits. One cubit is equal to 1.5 feet which makes it 40 feet.

    http://www.islamawareness.net/Hajj/kabaa.html

From the link we find that Kaaba is 39 feet six inches high as the Bible mentions.

    4) Zamzam water:

47:1 mentions that Zamzam water comes from under the house exactly as it happens. The sides or directions people can argue. For example, the earlier maps had south pole on top and north pole on bottom (north pole was south pole and vice versa) but later the Westerners changed it upside down. So, earlier Japan used to be on West and now its on the East.

The prophecy mentions that water comes from under the house (very true) and near the altar (muqaam e Ibrahim) which is also true. When these have been established as facts then the question of north or south or east is not relevant.

I hope this answers your questions. If you have any more questions, either on this article or on any other article, then please do ask in the comments section.
