Buddha Maitreya = Prophet Muhammad

Buddha was silent on the question of God. Whenever asked about God, he kept silent. This does not mean that he did not believe in God, he was silent because the people were so ddeply rooted in idol worship (330,000,000 gods) that he felt it best to concentrate on character improvement.

Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) in Buddhism

A)
Almost all Buddhist books contain this prophecy. It is in Chakkavatti Sinhnad Suttanta D. III, 76:
There will arise in the world a Buddha named Maitreya (the benevolent one) a holy one, a supreme one, an enlightened one, endowed with wisdom in conduct, auspicious, knowing the universe:

What he has realized by his own supernatural knowledge he will publish to this universe. He will preach his religion, glorious in its origin, glorious at its climax, glorious at the goal, in the spirit and the letter. He will proclaim a religious life, wholly perfect and thoroughly pure; even as I now preach my religion and a like life do proclaim. He will keep up the society of monks numbering many thousands, even as now I keep up a society of monks numbering many hundreds“.

B)
According to Sacred Books of the East volume 35 pg. 225:

“It is said that I am not an only Buddha upon whom the leadership and order is dependent. After me another Buddha maitreya of such and such virtues will come. I am now the leader of hundreds, he will be the leader of thousands.”

C)
According to the Gospel of Buddha by Carus pg. 217 and 218 (From Ceylon sources):

“Ananda said to the Blessed One, ‘Who shall teach us when thou art gone?’

And the Blessed one replied, ‘I am not the first Buddha who came upon the earth nor shall I be the last. In due time another Buddha will arise in the world, a holy one, a supremely enlightened one, endowed with wisdom in conduct, auspicious, knowing the universe, an incomparable leader of men, a master of angels and mortals. He will reveal to you the same eternal truths, which I have taught you. He will preach his religion, glorious in its origin, glorious at the climax and glorious at the goal. He will proclaim a religious life, wholly perfect and pure such as I now proclaim. His disciples will number many thousands while mine number many hundreds.’

Ananda said, ‘How shall we know him?’

The Blessed one replied, ‘He will be known as Maitreya‘.”

(i)
The Sanskrit word ‘Maitreya’ or its equivalent in Pali ‘Metteyya’ means loving, compassionate, merciful and benevolent. It also means kindness and friendliness, sympathy, etc. One Arabic word which is equivalent to all these words is ‘Rahmat’. In Surah Al-Anbiya:

“I sent thee not, but as a mercy for all creatures.”
[Al-Qur’an 21:107]

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was called the merciful, which is ‘Maitri’.

The Word Muhammad is also spelt as ‘Mahamet’ or ‘Mahomet’ and in various other ways in different languages. The word ‘Maho’ or ‘Maha’ in Pali and Sanskrit mean Great and Illustrious and ‘Metta’ means mercy. Therefore ‘Mahomet’ means ‘Great Mercy’.

Buddha’s doctrine was Esoteric and Exoteric:

According to Sacred Books of the East, volume 11, pg. 36 Maha-Parinibbana Sutta chapter 2 verse 32:

I have preached the truth without making any distinction between exoteric and esoteric doctrine, for in respect of truths, Ananda, the Tathagata has no such thing as the closed fist of a teacher, who keeps something back“.

Muhammad (pbuh) on the commandment of Almighty God delivered the message and doctrine without making any distinction between esoteric and exoteric. The Qur’an was recited in public in the days of the Prophet and is being done so till date. The Prophet had strictly forbidden the Muslims from hiding the doctrine.

3.
Devoted Servitors of the Buddhas
:

According to Sacred Books of the East volume 11 pg. 97 Maha-Parinibbana Sutta Chapter 5 verse 36:

Then the Blessed one addressed the brethren, and said, ‘Whosoever, brethren have been Arahat-Buddhas through the long ages of the past, they were servitors just as devoted to those Blessed ones as Ananda has been to me. And whosoever brethren shall be the Arahat-Buddhas of the future, there shall be servitors as devoted to those Blessed ones as Ananda has been to me’.”

The Servitor of Buddha was Ananda. Muhammad (pbuh) also had a servitor by the name Anas (r.a.) who was the son of Malik. Anas (r.a…) was presented to the Prophet by his parents. Anas (r.a…) relates: “My mother said to him, ‘Oh Messenger of God, here is your little servant’.” Further Anas relates, “I served him from the time I was 8 years old and the Prophet called me his son and his little beloved“. Anas (r.a…) stayed by the Prophet in peace and in war, in safety as well as in danger till the end of his life.

i)
Anas (r.a.), even though he was only 11 years old stayed beside the Prophet during the battle of Uhud where the Prophet’s life was in great danger.

ii)
Even during the battle of Honain when the Prophet was surrounded by the enemies who were archers, Anas (r.a…) who was only 16 years old stood by the Prophet.

Anas (R) can surely be compared with Ananda who stood by Gautam Buddha when the mad elephant approached him.

4.
Six Criteria for Identifying Buddha:

According to the Gospel of Buddha by Carus pg. 214:

The Blessed one said, ‘There are two occasions on which a Tathagata’s appearance becomes clear and exceedingly bright. In the night Ananda, in which a Tathagata attains to the supreme and perfect insight, and in the night in which he passes finally away in that ultra passing which leaves nothing whatever of his earthly existence to remain.’ ”

According to Gautam Buddha, following are the six criteria for identifying a Buddha.

i)
A Buddha attains supreme and perfect insight at night-time.

ii)
On the occasion of his complete enlightenment he looks exceedingly bright

iii)
A Buddha dies a natural death.

iv)
He dies at night-time.

v)
He looks exceedingly bright before his death.

vi)
After his death a Buddha ceases to exist on earth.

i) Muhammad (pbuh) attained supreme insight and Prophethood at night-time.

According to Surah Dukhan:

By the books that makes thing clear – I sent it down during a blessed night.”
[Al-Qur’an 44:2-3]

According to Surah Al-Qadar:

“I have indeed revealed this (message) in the night of power.”
[Al-Qur’an 97:1]

ii)
Muhammad (pbuh) instantly felt his understanding illumined with celestial light.

iii)
Muhammad (pbuh) died a natural death.

iv)
According to Ayesha (r.a.), Muhammad (pbuh) expired at night-time. When he was dying there was no oil in the lamp and his wife Ayesha (r.a.) had to borrow oil for the lamp.

v)
According to Anas (r.a.), Muhammad (pbuh) looked exceedingly bright in the night of his death.

vi)
After the burial of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) he was never seen again in his bodily form on this earth.

5.
Buddhas are only Preachers:

According to Dhammapada, Sacred Books of East volume 10 pg., 67:

The Jathagatas (Buddhas) are only Preachers.”

The Qur’an says in Surah Ghashiya:
Therefore do thou give admonition, for thou art one to admonish. Thou art not one to manage (men’s) affairs.”
[Al-Qur’an 88:21-22]

The man (last Prophet) promised by Buddha is none other than Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Buddhists often quote a verse to prove that Prophet Muhammad (s) is not the Maitreya.

They quote Cakkavatti-Sihanada Sutta (DN 26; The Lion’s Roar on the Turning of the Wheel)

And in that time of the people with an eighty-thousand-year life-span, there will arise in the world a Blessed Lord, an arahant fully enlightened Buddha named Metteyya, endowed with wisdom and conduct, a Well-farer, Knower of the worlds, incomparable Trainer of men to be tamed, Teacher of gods and humans, enlightened and blessed, just as I am now.

The idea of 80,000 years is in the following book:
Cakkavatti-Sihanada Sutta

This is a Sri Lankan book, it is about philospohies and is not a valid book. Buddha did not live in Sri Lanka. Many of the philosophies in this book are questioned by people for their authenticity and validity.

If you read this book, you will see that it is not even written by Buddha or dictated by Buddha or even taught by Buddha. This is a story and not even a prophecy. If you can show such words coming out from the mouth of Buddha, I will accept them.

Buddhists claim that Islam and Buddhism are totally against each other in their teachings. They claim that Buddhism is an athiestic religion, there is a concept of rebirth etc which is nowhere to be found in Islam.

The truth is that Buddhism is a God believing religion. Tibetan, Sri Lankan and other Buddhists believe in many gods and godesses. They atleast believe in a higher being. Buddha was a God believer and he said that the soul is unknown and unseen. He didn’t deny it and his statements shows that he believed in the soul.

The Western athiests have hijacked this religion and made it into a completely God hating religion.

  1. This article is wrong. It tries to prove that The Prophet Muhammad is the Lord Maitreya Buddha quoting only parts of Buddhist Doctrine. It is totally unfair.

Here mentioned that Sri Lankan source of Buddhism is wrong. So funny. Sri Lanka (Formerly Sinhale -The Country of Sinhalese) is the country that protected the original doctrine of Buddhism and later spread them around the world. Buddhism was gradually disappeared in India after the emperor Asoka. But Sri Lanka protected it well.

It is very funny to hear that Buddhist Books in Sri Lanka are wrong because The Lord Buddha did not live in Sri Lanka. If so others may say that Holy Qua-ran in Arab is the correct one and Holy Qua-ran in other countries are wrong because Prophet Muhammad didn’t live in other countries. But everyone knows that it is not. Never put such childish arguments.

The Lord Buddha has not accepted thing as soul. The base of Buddhism is Anichcha (Impermanence), Dukkha (Suffering / Dissatisfaction) and Anathma (Soulless). Buddhism accepts that there are gods. Some are very powerful some are not. Lord Buddha has preached many Sutras to gods. Buddhism says that gods are also a kind of being in this universe.

Buddhism is different from every religion and every philosophy. The only religion that is going close is Jainism.

Most of the religions claims that there are one or few gods who give liberation to the human kind. And most of the philosophies claims that there is no any being called gods and it is only an imagination of humans. But Buddhism rejects those two extremities.

Prophet Muhammad was mercyfull only to the people who accept Islam. But the Supremely Enlightened Lord Buddha was mercifull to even his enemies. He had the same compassion and mercy upon His son Rahula thero and His sworn enemy Devadatta thero.

Here is not the place to write more on this matter. ther are many sites that answer this type of wrong articles. But the unfortunate thing is that they don’t try to understand because most of the Muslims are Brainwashed to believe blindly. Muslim scholars like Dr.Shakir Nayek make very wrong statements which misguide the people.

  2. Thank you for commenting dear friend and I am glad at your quest for knowledge.

You state that the article is based on partial quotations to make Prophet Muhammad ﷺ appear to be Maitreya. I would be really grateful to you if you could provide other interpretations to the verses quoted in the article above. I would like to know how the material is out of context and how reading from a few passages before and a few afterwards changes the message stated above.

Coming to your point of Sri Lanka protecting the original doctrine of Mr. Buddha, that is a claim neither accepted by logic, nor history. Even the book itself is written in such a way that it does not appear to come from the mouth of Buddha. I mentioned that there is no historical evidence and I am sure you will agree when (or if) you try to search for them. Now as to how your argument is logically incorrect is also not a complicated issue. We do not know of any dates, names of those who protected it, their background, origin etc. Logic and history state that the place where Mr. Buddha came from had a different language from what you claim to be the protectors of Buddha’s message.

Let us assume for a while that Mr. Buddha’s original teachings were preserved by the people living in Sri Lanka, then they must have surely translated it or it could be that they never were the protectors of the message, converted to Buddhism and wrote their own philosophies. However, for your beliefs, we will assume it was the former. Translations will always lose the original message even if the translator is honest. What if the translator (assuming that Sri Lankans were protectors of his message) was not honest in their work? What if they realized that the culture of their land would reject these teachings and therefore, they changed it to suit the culture? You have the Christian church in front of you as an example. Their original teachings vary significantly from what they have turned out to be over centuries. In each country they went, they incorporated the local culture. Santa Claus and the Christmas are two small examples.

You cannot apply the same logic to the Qur’an as it is available in the same language unchanged since the way and time it was revealed. Over nine million people have memorized it by heart; it is incorruptible. Besides, there are original copies still present today in various libraries in Muslim countries. However, the only evidence of Mr. Buddha’s existence are his statues which are also not historical. There are paintings and statues of fairies and unicorns and we know that they do not and never existed.

You state that Buddhism accepts that there are gods which is also against the beliefs of the historical (alleged) Buddhist books. Words attributed to Mr. Buddha in these books are silent about gods whereas some other books speak of them. These books have been written over several centuries and so we do not know what Mr. Buddha originally believed and what was later added. Buddhism is a system that changes everyday and does not pass the test of time. It does not stand ‘chest out’ to innovations and beat away cultural philosophies.

Your comparison of Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ mercy with that of Mr. Buddha is very faulty as explained about the historical Buddha in this comment above and also shows the lack of knowledge about the last prophet of the Almighty Creator, i.e. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. However, I appreciate your desire for knowledge shown by your eagerness to read and comment here.

I would recommend you obtain your knowledge of Buddhism from Buddhist books instead of listening to lectures. People normally do not like books and feel that lectures serve the same purpose. This is, however, wrong as the lecturer may speak whatever he/she wants and nobody goes home to verify it.

  3. Words attributed to Mr. Buddha:

I am not the first Buddha [awakened one] who has come upon the Earth, nor will I be the last. In due time another Buddha will rise in the world, a Holy One, a supreme enlightened one, endowed with auspicious wisdom embracing the Universe, an incomparable leader of men. . . He will reveal to you the same eternal truths, which I have taught you. He will establish his Law [religion] . . . He will proclaim a righteous life wholly perfect and pure, such as I now proclaim. His disciples will number many thousands, while mine number many hundreds. He will be known as Maitreya [Muhammad].

Note: Maitreya means Muhammad in Arabic.

Buddha never wrote anything. The first book after him was written 400 years later. It is evident that his original message was lost and what time has proven right should be considered to be true.

Islam is not a new religion. It is the same way of life given by the Almighty to the very first man. The law, however, kept changing over time but the basic message remained the same, i.e. to believe and worship One God with no partner, son share in His Kingdom etc, to believe in Angels subservient to the Almighty, to believe in all His books and follow the latest one as previous ones kept getting corrupted, to believe in the Day of Judgement and life after death. People kept changing the message and for guidance, the Almighty kept sending His message through Prophets. It could be that Mr. Buddha was sent with the message and after him, people changed it and so it got corrupted. However, what is important is that we have the final message of the Almighty and it has been promised by The God to be safeguarded from corruption.

We should all follow that message to achieve everlasting success:

  4. check out this link to the Cakkavati Sihanada Sutta, the WHOLE COMPLETE SUTTA. The verse about Mettaya is but a small part of it. Read the whole scenario on the Mettaya Prophecy and certainly,it doesn’t fit Prophet Muhammad. Posted herewith is the said relevant part :

At that time the Varanasi of today will be royal city called Ketumati, powerful and prosperous, crowded with people and well-supplied. In Jambudipa there will be eighty-four thousand cities headed by Ketumati as the royal capital.

    24. ‘And in the time of the people with an eighty thousand-year life-span there will arise in the capital city Ketumati a King called Sankha, a wheel-turning monarch, a righteous monarch of the law, conqueror of the four quarters, who had established the security of his realm and was possessed of the seven treasures.
These are : the Wheel Treasure, the Elephant Treasure, the Horse Treasure, the Jewel Treasure, the Woman Treasure, the Householder Treasure, and seventh, the Counsellor Treasure.
He has more than a thousand sons who are heroes, of heroic stature, conquerors of the hostile army. He dwells having conquered this sea-girt land without stick or sword, by the law
    25. ‘And in the time of the people with eighty thousand-year life-span, there will arise in the world a Blessed Lord, an Arahant fully-enlightened Buddha named Metteyya, endowed with wisdom and conduct, a Well-Farer, Knower of the worlds, an incomparable Trainer of men to be tamed, Teacher of gods and humans, enlightened and blessed, just as I am now.
He will thoroughly know by his own super-knowledge, and proclaim, this universe with its devas and maras and Brahmas, its ascetics and Brahmins, and this generation with its princes and people, just as I do now. He will teach the Dhamma, lovely in the beginning, lovely in its middle, in the spirit and in the letter, and proclaim, just as I do now, the holy life in its fullness and purity. He will be attended by a company of thousands of monks, just as I am attended by a company of hundreds.
    26. ‘Then King Sankha will re-erect the palace once built by King Maha-Panada and having, lived in it, will give it up and present it to the ascetics and Brahmins, the beggars, the wayfarers, the destitute. Then, shaving off hair and beard, he will don yellow robes and go forth from the household life into the homelessness under the supreme Buddha Metteyya.
Having gone forth, he will remain alone, in seclusion, ardent, eager and resolute, and before long he will have attained in this very life, by his own super-knowledge and resolution, that unequalled goal of the holy life, for the sake of which young men of good equal family go forth from the household life into homelessness, and will abide therein.

  5. Cakkavati Sihanada Sutta was quoted by Zakir Naik.

It is not a Sri Lankan book. Just admit that you DON’T KNOW THE BUDDHIST SCRIPTURE.

Patika Sutta : Our Lord Buddha rejected the notion of creator god

Bhuridatta Jataka : Our Lord Buddha refuted the idea of creator god as bring illogical

    Read up more.

Islam may have similar values to Buddhism, but that doesn’t make Buddhism a former of Islam.

The fact is Buddhism never reserved hell for unbelievers nor have capital punishment for apostasy. There is no apostasy in Buddhism.

    Thank you.

    • The book has Sri Lankan origins even though it may not be known as Sri Lanka back then. I’m not sure what it was called back then (Lanka may be?). You’re simply denying its Lankan origins without mentioning its supposed real origins. One doesn’t need a high IQ to know it was not authored by Buddha himself.

Anyway, the point is that the book is so much filled with internal and external contradictions that one must not adopt it as their lifestyle. If you accept the book as true, then you also accept that it also points to the last Prophet and if you think the prophecy is false, then you must accept the book as unreliable.

***Patika Sutta : Our Lord Buddha rejected the notion of creator god
Bhuridatta Jataka : Our Lord Buddha refuted the idea of creator god as bring illogical***

Why don’t you quote rejection directly from Buddha instead of people centuries AFTER him?
